Manzanita, Oregon

This project began as a desire to own an affordable piece of land in Manzanita. My wife Katie, and I knew our funds were limited but we found an interesting lot on a quiet street that was within our budget. That was back in 2005.

Fast forward, past the great recession and raising six kids, we began construction in the fall of 2018. We designed this house to have a specific look and feel, but was not without its challenges. Through a county variance, geotech reports, wetland delineation surveys, Division of State lands, and the Army Corp of Engineers, we cleared the lot and, with a permit in hand, began to build.

Each foundation block contains an 11” wide helical piling drilled to depths of 33' - 44' into the earth to serve as structural anchors. From the rebar, link-bracing, and helical caps in the concrete through to the wooden posts, cabling, cantilevered beams to the shed roof, this homes brings engineering and design aesthetics to a symbiotic union that complements the difficult and challenging site.
